1. Choose Your Design

Whether you want to adapt a design from an existing rug or create an entirely new and unique rug, rug design choice is entirely yours. Make the perfect rug to fit the theme, color scheme, or pattern of your room. 2. Choose Your Weave

Select from 60, 80, 100, or 150 knot weave for your custom rug. The number pertains to the quantity of knots per square inch; the higher the knot count, the finer and more dense the weave. Your chosen design will help determine the weave necessary for your rug. Rugs that contain open areas or large design elements will require lower knot counts, while rugs with intricate designs will require higher knot counts. Our extensive in-store rug selection allows you to peruse the various knot weave counts and densities, and our rug experts will help you make the optimal knot weave selection for your design.

3. Choose Your Color(s)

With hundreds of colors to choose from, you're sure to find the perfect color or colors for your custom rug. If you can't find the exact color you need, we can match practically any shade. Landry and Acari can also create unique stippled or brindled effects by blending and weaving yarns with different shades of the same color.

4. Choose Your Materials and Texture

Materials and texture greatly affect the look and feel of your custom rug. Wool is the primary material used for most hand-woven rugs. You can also choose to add silk, mohair, or hemp to create accents in your rug.

Texture is just as important as a rug's design. The tufts of yarn on a rug's surface are known as the rug's pile, and there are many options to choose from when it comes to selecting a custom rug's pile. Rugs are most commonly cut-pile, where the tufts of yarn loops are cut, creating dense, soft rugs that feel great under bare feet. When the tufts of yarn are left uncut, the rug is known as a loop-pile. Loop-pile rugs are generally more durable than cut-pile rugs, and are ideal for high-traffic areas.

Pile height is another consideration to make when designing a custom rug. Pile height refers to the length of the yarn on a rug's surface. Low pile rugs are shorter in length than high pile rugs. Low pile rugs, because of their shorter length, are often very durable and offer reasonably even wear over time. High pile rugs are softer and more fluffy, but are less ideal in high-traffic areas.

5. Order a Strike Off

After designing your rug, a small sample, known as a "strike off," is woven for your approval. You'll be able to check the design and colors in your home to make sure they're just right before your final rug is woven.
