Originating from China, this antique rug features a traditional Peking design, crafted circa 1910. The primary background color is camel, complemented by a blue border. The main color throughout the rug is beige, creating a harmonious and subtle appearance. The rug is constructed with wool on a cotton foundation, providing durability and a soft texture.
Antique Peking rugs emerged prominently in the early 20th century, particularly around the 1920s. These rugs are characterized by a fusion of traditional Chinese motifs and Western design influences, which reflected the cultural exchanges of the era. They offer insights into Chinese artistry and historical context through their complex designs and craftsmanship.
Specifically, Peking rugs are known for their intricate geometric designs, including lattice patterns with interlocking shapes that exemplify the Peking style's detailed craftsmanship. During the 1920s, the color palette of these rugs expanded to include more vibrant colors, a departure from earlier, more muted tones. This shift was part of the broader trend toward design experimentation during the Art Deco period.
The production of Peking rugs was not confined to Beijing (formerly known as Peking). Other notable centers, such as Tientsin and Shanghai, also contributed to the diversity in design and stylistic influences. Western designers played a significant role in merging Western aesthetics with traditional Chinese weaving techniques, making these rugs a blend of cultural influences.
The weaving craftsmanship of Peking rugs involves high-density knots, a technique that results in durable and richly textured carpets. Traditionally, these rugs feature motifs such as floral arrangements and cultural symbols representing concepts like good fortune and power.
Over time, the styles of Peking carpets evolved, particularly during the 1920s and 1930s, influenced by the Art Deco movement. This evolution infused the rugs with artistic creativity, transforming them into both decorative pieces and historical narratives.
In terms of collectible value, Peking carpets are sought after for their artistic merit and cultural history. Factors that influence their market value include age, condition, design complexity, and rarity.
Visually, this particular rug displays a rectangular shape with a central medallion and defined border patterns. The central area is relatively plain, which emphasizes the more intricate borders. The outer border is a solid brown, enclosing the rug's edge. Inside this outer border is a decorative band featuring motifs like floral elements and birds, adding elaborate detail to the design. Another inner line border, composed of repeating geometric patterns in reddish-brown, lies between the main decorative border and the rug's central field.
The circular central medallion is detailed, primarily showcasing birds in flight, rendered in shades of blue with accents of white, pink, and beige. The flowing arrangement of the birds conveys a dynamic and lively feel against the otherwise calm background.
The rug’s color scheme relies on earthy tones such as beige and brown for the groundwork, with various shades of blue highlighting critical elements, especially in the medallion and decorative borders.

Don’t take our word for it

Last fall, my husband and I purchased a gorgeous silk from you for our Boston Condo. Based on the quality of your rugs and customer service, we decided to visit you again to purchase rugs for our Connecticut home. Luckily, we received your postcard about the tent sale and came home with two more stunning rugs.

I can't say enough good things about this store, especially Susanne and Breanna. I shop at many rug places as I am an interior designer looking for very specific rugs all the time. No one out there compares to this store and their wonderful Sales associates. Thank you Susanne and Breanna for all your help!

Over the past year we purchased three rugs, as well as carpet from L&A. Our experience could not have been more positive and we love what we purchased.
In addition, every single person
in the showroom was beyond helpful, knowledgeable and kind. It was truly a pleasure. Thank you!

Never have I enjoyed spending money as much as at Landry & Arcari!!! Thank you so much for your attention and guidance. The rug I chose grounds the furniture and makes the living room. It is so beautiful and I really appreciate all of your help.
