This Heriz rug design originates from the Heris village in northwestern Iran, known for its distinctive quality and durability. Characterized by bold geometric designs, prominent medallions, and vibrant colors, these rugs typically use high-quality wool, contributing to their longevity. This particular rug is a tribal-style Heriz from circa 1930, featuring a rust background and a navy border, with red as the main color. It is constructed with wool on a cotton foundation.

Heriz rugs are historically significant, with the classic "diamond on a square" medallion design becoming prominent in the late 19th century under the influence of Tabriz merchants. These merchants sought large rugs for export, and local weavers adeptly adapted antique carpet designs, merging rustic village craftsmanship with the grandeur of Persian court pieces.

The Heriz rug's design motifs reflect a blend of cultural influences from neighboring tribes such as the Turks, Armenians, and Kurds, resulting in bold angular patterns that distinguish them from other Persian rugs. The cold climate of the Heriz region produces fine wool ideal for rug weaving, which historically became a winter occupation.

In terms of construction, Heriz rugs are known for their dense piles, making them durable and long-lasting. They have a limited but diverse color palette, which easily complements various home settings, particularly with woodwork.

This rug features a rich color palette dominated by deep reds and blues, along with off-white and tan shades. It has an intricate and densely populated pattern with floral and geometric motifs. A large, ornate central medallion, combining floral and geometric elements in red and blue with accents of ivory and tan, anchors the design. The rug is framed by several distinct borders, with the outermost border featuring repeating floral motifs on a rich blue background. Within this, narrower borders showcase alternating geometric and floral designs, and the main border is wide and intricate, echoing the central design's complexity. The overall design is highly symmetrical, reflecting meticulous craftsmanship.
