Originating from Central Asia, this Khotan rug exemplifies traditional style with a beige background and a peach border, crafted around 1910. This antique piece is composed of wool on a cotton foundation, reflecting the materials customarily used in Khotan weavings.

Khotan rugs are named after Khotan, an ancient city on the Silk Road in southern Xinjiang, China. This strategic location facilitated cultural exchanges and trade, influencing the design elements found in these carpets. Khotan rugs are renowned for their fusion of motifs from Chinese, Tibetan, Persian, Turkish, and Turkoman cultures, creating a distinctive aesthetic that represents a blend of these diverse influences.

The rug's design includes various geometric shapes, animal forms, and floral elements, common in Khotan carpets. Particularly notable are the pomegranate motifs, symbolizing abundance, and the intricate patterns that reflect the craftsmanship and rich cultural heritage of the region.

Handwoven with painstaking attention to detail, this rug features an elaborate pattern of interconnected geometric shapes. Large diamond-shaped medallions align along the central axis, each containing smaller patterns and symbols, including floral and geometric shapes. The muted beige background contrasts with darker colors such as brown, black, and reddish-brown hues, enhancing the visual impact of the design.

The border structure of the rug is intricate. The outermost border is simple, featuring small diamond-like patterns evenly spaced. The innermost border is densely packed with complex geometric shapes and floral motifs, providing a striking frame for the central patterns. Between these, the interstitial borders incorporate angular lines and repeating motifs, contributing to the overall complexity of the design.

Symmetry is a key feature, with the left side mirroring the right and the top half mirroring the bottom, maintaining a uniform and balanced aesthetic. The high density of the pattern is especially evident within the borders and central medallions, creating a richly detailed and intricate appearance characteristic of Khotan rug designs.
