Originating from Persia, this Luri rug embodies the tribal style characteristic of the Luri people, an ethnic group from western Iran. Dating back to circa 1875, this piece is woven with wool on wool, a traditional material that enhances both its durability and warmth. The Luri people, known for their mountain-dwelling way of life, meticulously hand-weave these rugs, passing down their techniques through generations.

This particular rug features a navy background, which serves as the canvas for a rich, intricate design. The repeating pattern in the central field is composed of stylized floral and geometric motifs arranged in a grid-like manner. These motifs utilize a variety of colors, including red, blue, white, green, and yellow, providing a vibrant contrast against the deeper blue background.

The border of the rug is rust-colored and consists of three distinct sections. The innermost border has a zigzag pattern in red with white accents. The middle border, being broader, displays floral rosettes in red outlined with white, interspersed with geometric shapes forming a continuous chain-like pattern. The outermost border, which is the widest, features a repeating diamond motif in red, white, and blue, creating a lattice effect that frames the rug effectively.

The rug's design maintains a high degree of symmetry, with horizontal and vertical mirroring of the motifs in the main field. This symmetry is consistently upheld in the borders as well, lending a sense of balance to the overall appearance. Unlike some traditional Persian rugs, this Luri piece does not have a prominent central medallion. Instead, its appeal lies in the uniformity and repetition of smaller motifs, densely packed to maximize the visual impact.

Woven during a period of continued traditional practices following historical transitions in Iran, this Luri rug captures the cultural and artistic heritage of its makers. It stands as an artifact of the Luri people's way of life, encapsulating not only their skilled craftsmanship but also their cultural narratives and daily experiences through its intricate designs.
